Dealing With Aggression in Retail

Violence and aggression in the retail sector is on the rise and is of growing concern for businesses, staff and customers.

During thefts or shoplifting, staff are generally taught to ‘do nothing’ and observe and report, which whilst being great advice for staff safety, also leads to an increase in incidents as there is little chance of perpetrators being apprehended.

Retail theft is costing more than $7.5 billion each year (Source: Australian Retailers Association website http://www.retail.org.au/ara-security.aspx) and it is customers that will be paying for the loss of revenue by price increases. Other costs will be added to a purchase price to cover other aspects such as staff resignations, security guards, CCTV and other deterrents within shops.

At Stirling Resilience, we believe in a proactive approach to security and offer training for a number of industries including retail companies. We offer training for retail staff that will allow them to:

  • Identify a threat

  • Increase situation Awareness

  • Understand their legal position

  • Carry out appropriate actions according to the threat

  • Work within company policies and procedures

With a little knowledge and practice, staff will be able to maintain confidence in their workplace, keep themselves and customers safer and deter criminal acts of others.

Stirling Resilience tailors training for all clients and provides courses that generally cover the following subjects:

  • Situation Awareness - Common Indicators

  • Verbal De-Escalation

  • Understanding Body Language

  • Movement/Avoidance/Making Space

  • Skills Scenarios
